Hatchets and Chopping Axes

X-Series Chopping

Chopping consists of cutting a horizontal log into segments with multiple swift, sharp, downward strokes of a hatchet or axe. Our X5 Hatchet, X7 Hatchet and X15 Chopping Axe combine perfected weight distribution, advanced blade geometry, an ultra-sharp edge and virtually unbreakable design to maximize your performance. This smart combination of features allows the blade to bite three times deeper when chopping. With more blade penetration on each swing, you can chop more wood in less time, with less effort and hand strain. Our X5 Hatchet is a great choice for chopping kindling and small logs. Our X7 Hatchet is ideal for chopping kindling and small- to medium-sized logs. Both hatchets are lightweight, compact and portable, perfect for the on-the-go hiker or camper. Our X15 Chopping Axe offers the same specialized blade geometry as the hatchets with a longer handle to give you even more power with each swing. Choose the X15 Chopping for optimum performance on all your heavy-duty chopping jobs, or to make felling small trees quick and easy.

  1. Start by finding a flat place to chop, if possible. If you have to work on an incline, chop uphill, never downhill.
  2. Place the log you want to cut on a raised surface or platform, such as other logs. Make sure it's stable and won't come apart on the first swing of your axe.
  3. Stand with your feet apart, your chest parallel to the piece of wood you're going to chop. Place your off hand toward the bottom of the axe handle, your dominant hand up by the head.
  4. Twist slightly to the left or right, going with whichever hand you have closest to the head. Keep your feet planted as you swing the axe.
  5. As you swing the axe up, your top hand will slide down the shaft until the axe chops into your firewood.
  6. Repeat as necessary.

Splitting Axes

X-Series Axes Splitting Lineup

Splitting consists of cutting a vertically positioned log in half with a single downward stroke of an axe. We recommend our X11, X17, X25 and X27 Splitting Axes for more splits with fewer hits. All of our splitting axes combine perfected weight distribution, advanced blade geometry, an ultra-sharp edge and virtually unbreakable design to maximize your performance. This smart combination of features allows the blade to bite deeper and disperse wood more effectively, offering more one-strike splits with each swing. You can split wood easier with X-Series™ Axes, so each job requires less time, less effort and less hand strain. Our X11 Splitting Axe is the perfect one-handed tool for splitting small- to medium-sized logs. To split small- to medium-sized logs with increased power and speed, our X17 Splitting Axe features a longer handle. Choose our X25 Splitting Axe to split medium- to large-sized logs with powerful strokes that disperse the wood from the blade for clean splitting. Ideal for taller users, our X27 Splitting Axe features a handle extended to a full 36" to make splitting extra-large logs easier than ever.

  1. Cut logs the length necessary for your particular stove or fireplace. Shorter logs are easier to split for a beginner.
  2. Position the log in front of you on firm ground. Aim your first strike at the edge of the log where the growth rings are at their widest and weakest.
  3. Stand facing the log with your feet apart for balance. You should be a little more than the length of the axe from your target so you can lean in as you swing. Hold it at waist level with one hand at the base of the handle and the other at the neck, near the head of the axe. Keep your knees bent and bend a little at the waist.
  4. Raise the axe over your head with arms extended and back straight. As you swing the axe up vertical to your body, let the hand at the neck of the axe slide back to the hand at the base. Do this in one forceful and swift motion.
  5. Repeat as necessary until the log is split. If the log is still too large after the initial split, the pieces can be split again with a little less difficulty than the first split.
