Initially the size of the tile can determine the tool used for cutting. If your grout joints are parallel to the walls, you should mostly consider the ripping capacity of the tool. However, the trend today is towards increasing tile sizes and as a result the ability to cut diagonally, corner to corner becomes the critical factor. As a result larger, tile saws become necessary.
After considering the size, consider the number of cuts you need to make. Professionals as well as home owners often only have a few cuts to make. In this case, it may be beneficiary to use either a two rail tile cutter or a small tile saw. Moving and setting up a 10" tile saw may not always be the best choice for a few cuts. However, if you have make a lot of cuts or the tile is either large or hard like double fired porcelain tile then you would need to go with the big saw. Don't dismiss the two rail tile cutter, they are more portable, quicker and in the hands of an experienced cutter can provide superior cuts to tile saws. In addition, experienced cutters can make curved cuts, miters, and square cuts with a cutter. Attachments are usually available to cut holes. Generally we don't recommend single rail cutters and nippers as these tools produce inferior cuts and chipping is often a problem. If you have to make miter or square cuts or cut v-cap then you are better off with a tile saw. Sometimes a small tile saw can be set in a bathtub to make the cuts, they don't call it a wet saw for nothing. One more thing, if budget or the scope of the job is small you might consider renting a tile saw or cutter. Rental centers usually stock and maintain quality equipment, you may even be able to pick up a used piece of equipment at a reasonable price. (Fair disclosure, this is an online store, we want to sell you the right tools, but sometimes renting is the best option.)
